Biography

Research Interests:

  • Anything related to ocean and climate!
  • Special preference for ice-ocean-atmosphere dynamics and their feedbacks
  • Fascinated about extremes and tipping points (from a distance)
  • Always excited about trying out new mathematical methods

Career Stages:

  • PhD at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, US: Analysed Greenland winds and their impacts on the ocean, sea ice and ice sheet
  • Postdoc at GEOMAR – Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, Germany: Dived into North Atlantic climate variability and contributed to large, international ocean observing campaigns
  • Since 2019: Research/Senior Scientist in Marine Physics and Ocean Climate at NOC, UK

Current PhD Students:

  • Francesca Pereira (2021– ): Investigating spice effects on acoustics in the Arctic Ocean using observations and models
  • Xuehan Xie (2023– ): Working on freshwater–SST connections in the North Pacific (visiting NOC on a CSC)
  • Heather Jaques (2023– ): Analysing restratification processes in the Labrador Sea with gliders (lead supervisor is Louis Clement)
  • Harry Ashton-Keys (2023– ): Studying reasons for the spread in AMOC variability in CMIP models (lead supervisor is Jenny Mecking)
  • Lisanne Blok (2024– ): Examining drivers of coastal flooding using machine learning and other methods (based in Cambridge; lead supervisor is Ali Mashayek)
  • Scott Lewin (2024– ): Estimating the risks of subpolar gyre tipping using dynamical systems analyses (based at Imperial)
  • Vedant Vairagi (2024– ): Studying Arctic Ocean variability using ITP data (based at Bangor; lead supervisor is Yueng-Djern Lenn)
  • Yeon Choi (2024– ): Investigating vertical heat exchanges in the Arctic Ocean (advisory committee; based at the Alfred Wegener Institute)
  • Ufuk Özkan (2024– ): Analysing Arctic sea ice variability and air-sea fluxes with the AWI CM3 coupled model (advisory committee; based at the Alfred Wegener Institute)
