It’s International Women’s Day tomorrow (8 March) and we’re excited to share with you the NOC activities happening this week in celebration.
Webinar: Supporting girls to pursue an education and career in STEM
Dr Elena Garcia-Martin
Elena will be an expert guest speaker this Thursday at a Southern Universities Network webinar aimed at school and college teachers in the local area to support young girls to pursue and education and career in STEM.
“For years women have been underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) degrees and occupations. During this webinar I will talk about the gender gap and why we are so few, personal experiences while studying Marine Science and working in oceanography, and what can be done to balance the numbers.”
Radio: BBC Radio Merseyside
Dr Charlotte Williams
BBC Radio Merseyside will be interviewing with Dr Charlotte Williams on her exciting role at NOC, in celebration of International Women’s Day. Charlotte will be interviewed by presenter Helen Jones, and the piece will be aired during the afternoon show tomorrow.
Charlotte is a research scientist in our Marine Physics and Climate Group. A specialist working with small autonomous robots called gliders that help to measure the ocean in an environmentally friendly manner. Charlotte has a strong multi-disciplinary background and a keen interest in understanding biophysical interactions, using glider data to explore primary production, nutrient distribution and oxygen depletion in the ocean.
Magazine: AWE Magazine Scientist Spotlight
Dr Michela De Dominicis
Michela was featured in AWE Magazine as a scientist spotlight, celebrating all of her incredible work as a physical oceanographer and ocean modeller in NOC's Marine System Modelling group.
Michela uses super computers to understand the changes that can take place in the ocean over the next few decades. As part of her work, Michela looks at various “what if” scenarios. This can mean for example, studying the effect on the ocean from installing offshore renewable energy devices. Michela also studies the effect of climate change in coastal areas helping to develop our understanding of if natural habitats could protect our coastlines.
