This is the first time the oceans have featured explicitly on the G7 agenda. I see this change as further evidence of the growing recognition of the importance of the health of the ocean to human wellbeing.
The National Oceanography Centre (NOC) welcomes the inclusion of ocean science in four topics identified by G7 science ministers for further cooperation: www.bmbf.de/files/English_version.pdf.
Professor Ed Hill, Executive Director of the NOC, said “This is the first time the oceans have featured explicitly on the G7 agenda. I see this change as further evidence of the growing recognition of the importance of the health of the ocean to human wellbeing.”
The statement by G7 science ministers resulted from their meeting in Berlin on 8–9 October 2015. It follows adoption of a new sustainable development goal to ‘conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources’ by the United Nations General Assembly this September.
