National Capability National Public Good (NCNPG) funding supports activities that will strengthen national security, resilience, economic growth and societal benefit by providing independent scientific and expert advice, or other services, required by government and the wider public. NERC-UK Research and Innovation has funded six awards for the provision of this varied activity which will provide impartial, expert information to government, policymakers and international forums, in addition to rapid response to unexpected extreme events.
NOC managed marine activities supported by NCNPG
NCNPG activities will be delivered through two primary mechanisms, namely via (a) groups within the Directorate of Science and Technology and National Marine Facilities and (b) the International and Strategic Partnerships Office (ISPO).
This embedded effort is co-ordinated by the ISPO, with expertise in international and government relations and with extensive contact networks. ISPO also manages the extensive and complex engagement with the international community and continue to deliver support for coordination of UK marine activities via the MSCC and NOC Association.
NOC NCNPG has three expected Strategic Outcomes to better support engagement with stakeholders, delivery priorities and evaluation. These expected outcomes are:
Outcome 1: Support strengthening of UK global influence and ‘soft power’ in international ocean affairs
Outcome 2: Support UK economic development, environmental management and national security priorities by ensuring the UK Government, Legislators and Delivery Agencies are well-informed with science and technology concerning major emerging ocean issues
Outcome 3: Ensure the UK Government is able to access the best available scientific and technical support as required
