Marine Autonomous and Robotic Systems (MARS)

This one day workshop (Friday 15 November), preceded by a networking reception and dinner (on the evening of Thursday 14 November) will provide an opportunity for the UK research community to come together to discuss latest developments and scientific discoveries related to ocean gliders.

Registration is now open for the National Oceanography Centre’s (NOC) Marine Autonomy and Technology Showcase (MATS) 2019, which will take place from 12–14 November at the NOC’s waterfront site in Southampton.

The latest Autosub Long Range (ALR) vehicle being developed by the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) has successfully completed its first live trials in the waters of Portland Harbour in Dorset.

The NOC has appointed a new Chief Scientist to lead on Science Community Engagement for National Marine Facilities – Marine Autonomous and Robotic Systems (MARS), the NOC team which develops and operates autonomous systems in support of NERC’s Marine Facilities Programme.

An innovative marine robot, called ecoSUB, has been successfully trialled off the Orkney Isles in northern Scotland during a marine robot demonstrator mission co-ordinated by the National Oceanography Centre (NOC).

The full programme has been announced for the NOC Marine Autonomy and Technology Showcase (MATS) 2018, taking place from 13-15 November at the NOC’s waterfront headquarters in Southampton.

MATS 2018 promises to be the biggest showcase of its kind to date, with a record number of expert speakers and a wide range of exhibitors lined up.



The NOC has recently purchased and trialled a new type of marine robot called a Deepglider. The vehicle will join the NMF-MARS glider fleet, and will allow the UK science community to collect water column data at depths of up to 6000m.
