The Story of Autosub
Doggie and Dolphin - University College, London
By April 1987, there was an outline plan for two vehicle concepts:
DOGGIE (Deep Ocean Geological and Geophysical Instrumented Explorer) - a vehicle focusing on geology and geophysics that has the capability of surveying the ocean floor in the local area of a support ship using sidescan, reflection profiling and other techniques.
DOLPHIN (Deep Ocean Long Path Hydrographic INstrument) - a hydrography vehicle focused on more physical, chemical and biological oceanography.
These concepts were presented during the first Autosub Science Workshop in September 1988 at University College, London. In attendance was the NERC “Ad Hoc Working Group on Unmanned Autonomous Submersibles”.
