The NOC has developed a miniaturised total alkalinity sensor using microfluidic lab-on-chip (LOC) technology. This sensor allows the collection of in situ data with high spatial-temporal resolution throughout the water column (sample time ~10 minutes). The technology uses an open cell approach with spectrophotometric pH determination. It has an adjustable range, defaulting to 2000-2600 umol/kg and high accuracy and precision.
The first generation of this sensor has been deployed on pontoons, landers, a ship’s underway system, autonomous underwater vehicle, and a remote-operated vehicle.
