Application for West P&I Science Bursary at the National Oceanography Centre
The West P&I Seagoing Science Bursary provides financial support that will enable students and early career researchers in the field of marine science or oceanography, or those from developing countries who are keen to become involved in the field of marine science or oceanography, to take part in a 6-month mentor opportunity with a NOC scientist specialising in your area of interest.
This mentoring Bursary will take place in virtual form, consisting of an exclusive NOC workshop in November 2023 followed by 6 months of support and mentoring meetings. The workshop will include a 3D tour of RSS Discovery and an opportunity to engage with a range of NOC scientists. You will hear about their experiences, careers and current research and have the opportunity to ask questions and share ideas. All recipients of the virtual bursary will receive a completion certificate.
Our 2023 mentoring Bursaries are awarded to 5 individuals through a competitive selection process and you can apply for one using this form. It is therefore essential that the Bursary applicants are registered as students, or employed as researchers for the period of the Bursary, and that permission for the visit is given by supervisors or line managers (as appropriate). To be eligible for a West P&I Bursary you must be in postgraduate education (Masters level or PhD).
Two of the five chosen applicants will be selected to gain practical experience of ship borne science and will join a research cruise in 2024 alongside NOC staff. This Bursary will provide the financial support needed for travel in order for you to take part. The two applicants for this unique opportunity will be selected once the virtual mentoring programme has begun

Applications for the West P&I Seagoing Science Bursary are open once every two years. The deadline for applications is 20th October 2023.
